Irondale defeats Blaine 2-1
Nope that's not a typo folks! On Saturday night the Irondale Knights defeated the Blaine Bengals 2-1 at Fogerty arena in Blaine, MN. Fast and physical this was a great display of High School Hockey in Minnesota. The Bengals scored first, very late in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. However, shortly into the second Junior Ryan Solz picked off an errant Blaine pass to create a 2 on 1 opportunity. Solz made a nice pass to a breaking Gunner Bourassa who made no mistake to tie the game 1-1. From this point on the physicality and intensity of the game was taken to another level. Back and forth action and chances for both teams played out for most of the second period. The Knights defensemen made it tough on the skilled Blaine forwards all night and late in the second period Blaine took a retaliatory penalty to put the Knights on the power play. At the start of the 3rd period the Knights would remain on the power play for another 40 seconds and they made the most of it! This time Gunner Bourassa would feed Ryan Solz in front who tucked it behind the Blaine goalie to make it 2-1 Knights! With a whole period yet to go the game was far from over. The Knights would have their chances in the third but Blaine was pressing hard and throwing their very best at the Knights. Senior goaltender Max Eilefson would prove to be the difference maker with some unbelievable saves in the the third to fend off the Bengals and complete the 2-1 victory! The Knights move to 1-0-2 and will take on their inter-district rival Mustangs on Tuesday at the Super Rink in Blaine.
